We buy the best shoes, pick the best clothing, worry about distance and timings, but how often do we consider the ground we are running on? Sandy beaches, woodland trails or urban streets, all present their own challenges while giving our bodies a fundamentally different workout. Running on sand, for instance, burns more than one-and-a- half times the calories of a flat firm surface. But how many joggers stick to the same routes out of habit, convenience or a misplaced belief that it’s crucial to a particular training programme they’re following?
